I'm that good at planning now

More details about this so-called public meeting:

Photos are on my Flickr:

Whole set of photos.
Also, I'm collecting tips on how to make ChicagoBikes.org more interesting, or ideas on features to add. We just broke into online videos...
If you can't tell, "I like my job" and "I like PHP and MySQL."
I like how math and programming are universal languages, known around the world.

My Nishiki broke on Thursday

It broke about 2 blocks after leaving Jewel on Des Plaines (home of one of the worst bike parking configurations).
I expected this to happen and I decided to continue riding my Prestige until it broke. Then, I would know it as broken and that I could then take it to someone to fix. I was not injured when it broke - the bike just kind of wiggled and I stopped and my friend picked up me and the bike. :(

My home backup solution
Apr. 23rd, 2009 | 12:32 am
Mac Mini with Leopard Server installed, which has a "Time Machine" compatible file server. This allows for multiple backup sources to this one destination.
Connected to the Mac Mini is the NewerTechnology Guardian Maximus.
http://www.newertech.com/products/g
Inside the Guardian Maximus are two identically spec'd Seagate 750 GB hard drives (they were $100 when I bought them 15 months ago; now, 1.5 TB costs $100).
Time Machine is a new feature in Mac OS X 10.5. It makes incremental backups every hour. It's highly regarded by Mac users, especially, but also technology critics and reviewers. It's the best backup solution anyone has ever made for consumers: it's simple and effective. The only configuration it allows is choosing which folders it does NOT back up.
All three of my computers are Macs and two are not the Mac Mini: the MacBook and the iMac. These two computers back up every file (including attached external drives) to the Mac Mini and Guardian Maximus over a gigabit network to the Time Machine file server. Every hour!
In addition, my computers also backup to an online destination the Mac's equivalent to the Windows "My Documents" folder and a selection of other important folders. This service is provided by SugarSync, which has the added benefit of syncing the selected folders across all computers so that every computer has a current copy of the documents. I also have SugarSync installed at work so I can access from home my work documents.
Unfortunately, my home backup solution does not have an offsite, full-drive component. That is, if my Guardian Maximus inadvertently lights on fire or destroys itself, I don't have a full backup of the computers stored away from home :(
It took me about 3 months to come up with this solution, and also to earn the money to pay for it all. The Mac Mini was $450 and the Guardian Maximus was $150. The two drives were $100 each. The total was $800. The Mac Mini and the hard drives also serve as my HDTV and DVR! This solution has come to my aid several times when 1) I wanted to reinstall the operating system but bring back all my applications, settings, and documents, and 2) I bought a new laptop. this MacBook, and wanted to load the exact same settings as the iMac.
The backup solution is also Windows compatible because the file server also serves its shares as SMB/CIFS.
Questions? I would love to answer them.

I don't back the bid

I don't back the bid
Originally uploaded by stevevance
I nailed this message on the cross.
I do not support the Chicago 2016 Olympics bid in its current form. It needs to be improved or ended.
I want to quote few sections of the bid book for you:
-all existing infrastructure and planned projects listed in 15.6.1 and 15.6.3 are guaranteed by the responsible agencies.
-No existing transport infrastructure requires permanent work.
What does this mean? No Olympic-specific projects are needed. Or, no infrastructure will be upgraded because of the Olympics, but because of annual maintenance and already planned capital projects.
Other inconclusive and confusing sections:
-There will be "access to the Federal Borrowed Bus Program, which will be used to augment Chicago's rolling stock during the Games."
Federal Borrowed Bus Program - wtf is that?
Table 15.11 shows the current totals of rolling stock broken down by transit agency and then by type. It then mentions how much each transit agency will have in 2016. It then mentions how much will be needed to supplement the current amount. The amount needed to supplement is 0. That would mean that all transit agencies will have all the rolling stock needed to 1) provide for their regular customers, and 2) provide rides for an additional 100,000 people riding at least twice per day (there and back). Also, some buses will serve shuttle duty to ferry passengers between the rail stations and the venues. This means that those spectators taking rail will demand 2-4 rides (2 if station is adjacent to venue, 3-4 if person has to take shuttle between station and venue).
---
Do you see what I'm getting at?
The plan needs some improvement. If the bid producers truly believe that the setup they describe (and I copied above) will work, then I would like to see the discussions, documentation, and calculations the bid producers undertook in collaboration with the transportation agencies in Chicago and Illinois.
Also, an analysis of the expected costs and benefits would be contributive.

Protect your computer
Mar. 31st, 2009 | 04:00 pm
1. Install and run once a day AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition.
2. Install and run once a day Ad-Aware.
3. Make sure your computer has the latest Windows updates.
There is hardly a better and simpler regimen than the steps above for protecting your computer from viruses, worms, malware, spyware, and hacking. No BitDefender. Throw Norton out the Window. McAfee ain't worth its trouble.
Do steps 1, 2 and 3, and you're good to go!

Personal Rapid Transit system in a Central Business District
Originally uploaded by stevevance
Hand drawn, scanned, Photoshopped.
Version 1.
Missing:
-Typed labels to replace hand written labels
-Better labels for A, B, C, D
-Label for food court and mall
This is an imagined Personal Rapid Transit system in an imagined Central Business District in Anycity, Anystate, USA.
Hand drawing this took about 2 hours over the course of several days. Scanning was quick (duh), but removing artifacts, stray pencil marks, extra thick lines and other imperfections took about 2.5 hours.
