Winter riding gear
Feb. 21st, 2008 | 10:25 am
Here is a list of all the stuff I wear to ride in the winter:
Salomon Avo insulated, waterproof boots -60

From EMS
Adidas Response tights -40
Nashbar
Adidas Climawarm jersey -40
Nashbar
DeFeet Wool Blaze sock -13
Performance
Performance PolyPro skull cap -0
Performance
Performance PolyPro balaclava -0
Performance
Pearl Izumi AmFib Inferno gloves -65 (these have three fingers has opposed to two or four - not including thumbs)
Brands Cycle (not where I bought them, but has the best price currently)
Nashbar Lightweight gloves (these go inside Pearl Izumi gloves so I can remove those to do certain tasks and still be marginally protected from the cold/wind) -15
Nashbar
Nashbar Revel multi-lens sunglasses -15 (I bought these because they came with absolutely clear lenses for nighttime riding)
Nashbar
Optic Nerve Redhawk RX sunglasses -20 (for daytime riding. I bought them with the intention of getting the prescription filled, but then I lost my first pair and I'm on the second. Not going to get the prescription because I know I will just lose that and it costs too much.)
NetShades (they also sell on eBay)
Threshold gaiters -20 (I haven't used these yet, they just came and it's not wet out)
Campmor
Ogio Patrol backpack -90 (awesome backpack, holds everything I need it to)
Backcountry.com (but I got it at their outlet last year)
I think that should do it for me. What's next: windproof underwear. It gets really cold down there sometimes. Add it all up and you get $378, not including any taxes or shipping fees. That also includes the $90 backpack I use at all times during the year. The worst purchase on here are the $65 gloves. I needed them then and I needed them now, money was hardly an object because I had to do my job and I was suffering on the way to work and I couldn't wait for shipping to get gloves here. I had waited already for some gloves which I returned the day after they arrived and bought the ones you see listed here.

what I think is an interesting story
Feb. 7th, 2008 | 12:45 am
So as everyone in Chicago knows, Wednesday was pretty wet and slushy. I, for some dumb reasons, went out biking to work (with 3 pairs of socks on to stay warm) ignoring the obvious fact that my shoes were going to get soaked - and I didn't bring any backup socks!
So I arrived to work with fucking cold feet, locked up my bike, and walked over to the large Sears department store at State and Madison. I went straight to mens shoes and found some expensive Craftsman brand boots. The only requirement I had for boots was that they had to be waterproof. These were, so I bought them.
I also needed some socks. I just wanted ONE pair. Nope, I bought 6 pairs in a sealed bag. Whatever. I was uncomfortable and this was my payment for continually delaying purchasing boots for myself. These boots are not just for riding, but for walking around in the snow, too. Depending on the snow conditions tomorrow at 8:30 AM, I may have to walk to class.
They really are waterproof. I walked through every puddle I could when I left my new cubicle to get some Subway across the street.
Oh, and the story gets even better: To save money, I signed up for the Sears MasterCard. I now have a $5,000 credit limit on that bitch! It will be arriving soon! And I will pay it off and cancel it. I already have one credit card and one is all a person who knows how to manage money needs (well, two are necessary if you prefer to use a Discover card).
All in all, the boots gave me a much more pleasant ride home from work.
Yoga is great. I did two headstands today and then another one when I got home. But I haven't worked out since last Friday. I will probably work out tomorrow after my 9 PM class, and then again on Friday after work.

Updates

I may have gotten the bike job with the city. One of the interviewer's emailed me today about meeting with him today. I got the message too late. Hopefully, I will hear from him in the morning and I can go before class (or even skip class).
I just bought $54 of bike winter 2k7 clothes.
I have to go to the Apple Store tomorrow or Friday to buy an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. My current router is busted and won't serve Internet after like 3 minutes of being restarted. The Apple router has Gigabit ethernet which improves network speed - I'm planning on buying a NAS soon.
